WPO/CWP Convention Overview & Highlights
The 2013 American Psychological Association's (APA) convention convened in Honolulu on July 31 - Aug. 4, 2013. The Women’s Programs Office (WPO) and the Committee on Women in Psychology (CWP) were excited to contribute several sessions to the convention line-up.
On Wednesday, July 31, WPO Senior Director Shari E. Miles-Cohen, PhD, and Nida H. Corry, PhD, senior legislative and federal affairs officer, Public Interest — Government Relations Office participated in a session “APA Public Policy Efforts to Advance Women’s Issues: Advocacy Opportunities Abound.”
On Thursday, Aug. 1, WPO senior director, Shari E. Miles-Cohen chaired a symposium “Women with Disabilities in STEM Education — Building a Road Map for the Future.” Participants included BAPPI member Dolores Cimini, PhD (University of Albany), Andrea Konig, PhD (University of Virginia), Michelle Nario-Redman, PhD (Hiram College) and Arielle Silverman, MA (University of Colorado at Boulder).
Also on Thursday, Joan Chrisler, PhD, chaired the fourth annual roundtable discussion, “Why YOU Should Consider becoming a Journal Editor: A Panel Discussion with Women Journal Editors.” provided the perfect atmosphere for an intimate discussion among an incredible panel of editors including Hortensia Amaro, PhD, associate editor, American Psychologist®; Lydia P. Buki, PhD, editor, Counseling Psychologist; Lisa Harlow, PhD, editor, Psychological Methods®; Mimi Ormead, PhD, associate editor, Psychology of Women Quarterly and Esther Rothblum, PhD, editor, Fat Studies and the Journal of Lesbian Studies.
On Friday, Aug. 2, Joan Chrisler chaired a symposium, “Older Women and Health Disparities.” Presenters included Alisha N. Ali, PhD (New York University), Ellyn Kaschak, PhD (San Jose University), Naleen N. Andrade, MD (University of Hawaii at Manoa). Karen A. Roberto, PhD, (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University) served as discussant.
CWP member Julie Wiliams, PhD, served as chair for a symposium, “Abuse of Women with Disabilities as Reflected in Health Disparities” with presenters Susan M. Fraker (Wright State University) and Angela Kuemmel, PhD (Louis Stokes VA Medical Center). Former Committee on Disability Issues in Psychology chair, Kim Gorgens, PhD (University of Denver-GSPP) served as discussant.
On Saturday, Aug. 3, Maureen McHugh, PhD, CWP chair-elect hosted the annual CWP Network Breakfast Meeting.
Also, the WPO hosted “Research and Training Funding: Talk with NIH Staff” in the Public Interest Hospitality Suite with Mariela Shirley, PhD, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Cheryl Boyce, PhD, National Institute on Drug Abuse and Dionne Jones, PhD.

2013 Leadership Awards
On Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, Joan Chrisler, PhD, presented the 2013 CWP Leadership Awards during the SPW Awards Ceremony. This year’s recipients included the following:
The APA Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology (LIWP) was recognized for outstanding commitment to increase the diversity, number and effectiveness of women psychologists as leaders in academia, practice and other professional settings.
Feminism and Psychology received a citation for encouraging, supporting and showcasing cutting-edge and transformative feminist theory and research.

CWP 40 Years Strong
On Thursday evening, the CWP members ventured to Honolulu Elks Club #16 nestled at the base Diamondhead crater to celebrate. The CWP 40th Anniversary — Reunion Dinner for remembrance and reflection, laughter, song and even some tears.
On Friday Aug. 2, 2013, the excitement continued as Alexandra Rutherford, PhD, interviewed a panel of CWP chairs spanning 40 years. The symposium entitled, “Living History: A Celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Committee on Women in Psychology” included former CWP chairs Ellyn Kaschak, PhD; Hortensia Amaro, PhD; Lorraine D. Eyde, PhD; Linda M. Forrest, PhD; Karen F. Wyche, PhD and Joan C. Chrisler, PhD.
The Presidential Citation
During the APA Council of Representatives meeting on Friday, Aug. 3, 2013, APA President Don Bersoff, PhD, JD, presented CWP with a presidential citation acknowledging 40 years of service to women and psychology Current and former CWP members standing were acknowledged with a standing ovation.
