Featured Psychologist: John Chaney, PhD
John Chaney, PhD, is a professor of psychology in the Department of Psychology at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He is also the director of the Marriage and Family Clinic, the American Indian Into Psychology Program and the American Indian Studies Program. Dr. Chaney teaches courses in pediatric psychology, psychology of minorities and family therapy. His research focuses on stress and coping influences on long-term adjustment in pediatric chronic illness and on attributional style, helplessness and depression in adults with chronic illness. In addition, Chaney also studies academic achievement in American Indian students, implicit racial bias and the social cognitive basis of using Native American images as sports mascots. As a clinician, Chaney interests include family sytsems theory and narrative approaches to therapy.
He was the co-author of the first paper focused on American Indians ever to be published in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology. In 2009, Oklahoma State University bestowed upon Chaney its Distinguished Research Award for his work that merges pediatric psychology and minority and diversity issues.
Chaney became an American Psychological Association Fellow in 2010. He has also received APA’s Division 22 Research Excellence Award. His list of honors go on to include the Oklahoma State University Leadership Legacy Award and Outstanding Teacher Award; The Indian Health Service, Distinguished Service Citation; and The Oklahoma Psychological Association, Outstanding Contribution by a Psychologist in the Public Interest. Despite his many awards and honors, Chaney is still striving and hopeful to have more American Indians visible in the field of psychology.
