APA Recommends Medicare and Medicaid Reforms

Recommendations would help strengthen mental and behavioral health care

APA signed on to two letters sponsored by different coalitions of mental health groups responding to the Senate Finance Committee's Aug. 1 request for information on strengthening America's mental and behavioral health system. One specifically addressed access and quality of care concerns related to children and youth (PDF, 170KB) and made recommendations specific to Medicaid. The other letter made recommendations regarding the needs of older Americans (PDF, 231KB).

Both letters highlighted means of improving integrated care efforts, increasing the accessibility and affordability of care, and the pressing need for more professionals equipped to address the mental and behavioral health needs of these populations.

APA also submitted its own letter in response to the committee's request (PDF, 151KB) that addressed issues in education, practice and public interest areas that would improve these programs.
