Comments Submitted to NIH Make Case for LGBTI Research Priorities

On Oct. 28, 2013, APA responded (PDF, 202KB) to a recent National Institutes of Health request for information (RFI) on the health and health research needs, specific health issues and concerns for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) populations. The association identified several priorities, including:

  • Funding more research grants through the Research on the Health of LGBTI Populations funding opportunity announcements.
  • Creating comprehensive research training programs to enhance cultural competency of researchers working with LGBTI persons.
  • Developing methods to collect and utilize sexual orientation gender identity data in electronic health records.
  • Increasing engagement and communication with the LGBTI health advocacy and research communities.

APA engages in strong, ongoing advocacy on behalf of LGBT health, equality, and civil rights. To participate in these efforts to inform policy through scientifically-based research, please consider joining the APA Public Policy Action Network.
