PI-GRO Marks the Introduction of S. 1404, the Supporting Child Maltreatment Prevention Efforts in Community Health Centers Act of 2009
On July 7, 2009, Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI) introduced critical new legislation to help address the tragedy of child maltreatment. The bill, S. 1404, the Supporting Child Maltreatment Prevention Efforts in Community Health Centers Act of 2009, would establish demonstration grants, administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to:
Implement evidence-based preventive parenting skills training programs at federally qualified community health centers (FQHC) or at permanent or temporary residences;
Provide screening to identify parental risk factors for maltreatment such as depression, substance abuse, and intimate partner violence;
Provide access to individualized quality mental health services offered at the FQHCs or at off-site locations; and
Design and implement evaluations to assess the impact and feasibility of the integrated services model used at each FQHC participating in the demonstrations.
