Public Interest Staff

  • Judith M. Glassgold, PsyD │ Associate Executive Director
    Provides overall leadership and direction for PI-GRO in applying psychology to the fundamental problems of human welfare and social justice within APA and to Congress and federal agencies. Responsible for cross-cutting issues including mental health as an element of overall health and health disparities. Director of the APA Congressional Fellowship Program. 

  • Roberta A. Downing, PhD │ Senior Legislative and Federal Affairs Officer
    Responsible for issues related to socioeconomic status, poverty and aging.

  • Micah A. Haskell-Hoehl │ Senior Policy Associate
    Program Administrator for the APA Congressional Fellowship. Coordinates communications efforts, including website and social media. Assists Public Interest Government Relations staff in tracking legislation and conducting policy-related research.

  • Ivy K. Pendleton, MS │ Program Coordinator
    Administrates and coordinates the day-to-day operations of PI-GRO, including financial, personnel and programmatic activities. This position serves as the initial point of contact for APA members, congressional and federal agency offices, outside organizations and others interested in PI-GRO matters. 

  • Stefanie Reeves, MA, CAE │ Senior Legislative and Federal Affairs Officer
    Responsible for issues related to individuals with disabilities and ethnic minority affairs.

  • Leo Rennie, MPA │ Senior Legislative and Federal Affairs Officer
    Responsible for issues related to individuals infected and affected by HIV/AIDS and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual concerns.

  • Ben Vonachen │ Senior Legislative Assistant
    Responsible for issues related to immigration and American Indians and Alaska Natives. Administers the Public Interest Government Relations Graduate Student Internship Program. Also assists Public Interest Government Relations staff in tracking legislation and conducting policy-related research.

Education Staff

  • Karen Studwell, JD │ Associate Executive Director for Education Government Relations
    Responsible for authorizing and appropriating legislation and agency relations regarding education and training programs for psychology in the Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration including the Graduate Psychology Education Program.

  • Jennifer B. Smulson │ Senior Legislative and Federal Affairs Officer
    Responsible for authorizing and appropriating legislation and agency relations regarding the application of psychology to schools and education including the Higher Education Act and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act as well as mental and behavioral health on college campuses.

  • Alexandra M. Ginsberg │ Legislative and Federal Affairs Associate
    Provides support and coordination for legislative initiatives of the Education Government Relations Office. Assists Education Government Relations staff in tracking legislation and conducting policy-related research.

    Liaison to National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Science Foundation (Biological Sciences Directorate), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and Federal Aviation Administration (human factors research).

    Liaison to National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and the Institute of Educational Sciences (IES) of the Department of Education. 

  • Patricia Kobor, MA │ Senior Science Policy Analyst
    Liaison to National Institutes of Health (NIH) (all institutes except NICHD, NIAAA, NIDA, and NIMH), NIH women's health research, and NIH Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research.

  • Heather Kelly, PhD │ Senior Legislative & Federal Affairs Officer
    Liaison to Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, National Science Foundation (Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences Directorate), and White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

  • Christine Jamieson │ Science Policy Associate
    Liaison to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). Assists rest of Science Government Relations staff in tracking legislation and coordinates events including Capitol Hill briefings.
